The human and basic rights of Zimbabweans have been completely eroded under ZANU PF rule. Zimbabweans have been reduced to a nation without their naturally conferred rights and the privileges that come with citizenship. The ZPDP will work to restore, respect and protect these lost human and basic rights. We acknowledge that in order to safeguard the human rights of Zimbabweans, our people need security of life, property, work and the opportunity to live and develop in peace and dignity. We will work towards the attainment and consistent preservation of all these basic human rights of the Zimbabwean people.
Similarly, we will protect the rights of women, children, the elderly, the sick and the physically challenged. We also consider the humane treatment of those in custody as an important part of our human rights agenda. A ZPDP government will therefore seek no political vengeance for our would-be predecessors.
Independence of the Media
A socially responsible media plays an important role in the dissemination of unbiased information for education and for national enrichment. In the same vein, a pluralistic media, giving vent to divergent views and opinions, is necessary for a healthy democratic society.
A ZPDP government will safeguard free expression and when necessary review any laws that could hinder freedom of speech and professional journalism. Media laws formulated by our government will protect the reputation and integrity of media houses while respecting the individual person’s right to privacy.
A ZPDP government will work towards ensuring that the Zimbabwean media is fair, objective and truthful, and will not encourage or support irresponsible journalistic practices. Our government will work towards the total independence of the media and an end to wanton and unnecessary attacks on political opponents, using the instruments of state media for disinformation, political vendetta and gratuitous insults.
Culture and Religion
The ZPDP believes the principle importance of culture should be in the enrichment of the lives of the people of Zimbabwe. We will work to conserve the culture and heritage of Zimbabwe. We will take into account such objectives as culture for the youth, culture in education and culture as part of leisure and tourism development.
The ZPDP will assist in the support of underrepresented traditions in order to aid in documenting the full range of Zimbabwe ’s cultural tapestry. The development and support for our national culture shall recognize unity in diversity and recognize the value of culture as an instrument for validating ourselves as an African people. |
